The fortnightly five - 09 June 2026
A rundown of five fresh items on my headphones from the last fortnight.
Les Vulves Assassines - Louise Mitchell (official website)
Muscling in on the top of today's list is Les Vulves Assassines (The Murderous Vulvas) with a celebration of the life of bad-ass Parisian activist, animal welfare forebear and inventor of the anarchist black-flag - Louise Michel. To be honest, I have no idea of the exact meaning of the lyrics. But when a song can transcend the boundaries of language and still be an absolute banger, that's a win in my books. I still need to sit and listen to the full album, "Vulcanae rock’n’rolla" but I'm betting their flavour of marxist future feminism is exactly my version of a good time. A big thank you to the subscriber who clued me in on how hot this band is.
Gigi Masin- Movement (Bandcamp)
Ethereal and cinematic, Masin weaves ambient electronica with texture and deft. Full of cosmic sustain, house beats and dynamic samples, it feels like being bathed in a field of early morning sunshine. This album is a journey of delight and hope, that was built out of a personal story of adversity and deep grief. I recommend intentionally taking time out to just sit and experience it in full. Let it flow over you the first time through. Gigi is a master, and there is a reason his work has been sampled by artists such as Björk and Post Malone.
Clear Path Ensemble - Ascending (Bandcamp)
Meditative and sublime, the latest Clear Path Ensemble album slips me into a world of harmony, gentleness and peace. Lush rounded marimba and vibraphone sounds trail sonic spirals and bounce over dreamy piano and mellow rhodes keyboard chords. I'm only dipping my toes into the world of neo-jazz so can't speak in any expert way. Except to say when marshmallows go to sleep, their dreams probably sound like this.
Party Dozen - Special Unit (Bandcamp)
Aussie's favourite party pack-sized band, Party Dozen, returns with a chaotic single. Toting flashlights, bananas-as-guns and armed with silly-string the duo romp through suburban Sydney bringing high-energy antics and a unique flavour of law enforcement. The song itself is a full-frontal hit of drums, sax and unhinged psych-rock samples. I love it when two people can make so much noise.
The Bug Club - Every Single Muscle (Bandcamp)
Cementing itself the filth list spot is The Bug Club with their fifth studio album. I have such a soft spot for this Welsh duo. Especially the way their brand of catchy twee egg-punk undercuts the seriousness of life. 'Every Single Muscle' brings us eighteen very short tracks that are punchy irreverent pokes at human anatomy. They are on the filth-list purely for the catchiness of "How can we be friends". I have the irresistible urge to sing along, and maybe I shouldn't be doing that in public.......
Thank you again this week to all my readers. Remember that listening to new music is good for the brain and soul. If you have a fresh tune you wish to share email me waxonandonandon@gmail.com.
