The fortnightly five - 23 June 2026
Cover art for Jeff Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra 'Night Blooms'

A rundown of five fresh items on my headphones from the last fortnight.

Jeff Goldblum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra ft. Scarlett Johansson - The Best Is Yet To Come  (Official Site)

Aroha mai to anyone who has a mild crush on either Jeff Goldblum or Scarlett Johansson, your innocent daydreaming about them may be dialed up a notch or two on the Scoville scale. For those who may not be familiar, both of them are stellar musicians. Goldblum has been playing the piano since childhood and, naturally, leads his own jazz orchestra. Johansson's quirky and notable singing career spans almost two decades. Smoky and playful 'The Best Is Yet To Come' closes Goldblum's latest album. A steamy little number that is cheekily titled 'Night Blooms'.

Tigerbalm - Bubblegum Discos (Bandcamp)

I love it when an album says what it is on the tin. Tigerbalm's second album is full of fruity and snappy beats, retro exotica and nu-disco. She deftly mixes Latin American syncopation and Afrobeats. Grab your hot pants, lip gloss and piña coladas for an old-skool booty-shaking fun time.

Vika & Linda - Little Baby (Official Site)
This has to be the most gorgeous song I've heard so far this year. The Bull sisters are treasures of the Australasian music scene, having performed for over three decades. Blending soul, gospel, rock and country with their Tongan heritage, together they are a magical force. I could drift away to them singing me sweet lullabies any night of the week.

The Bobby Lees - New Self (Official Site)

Cathartic and empowering 'New Self' rips through eight tracks of unapologetic liberation. Lead singer Sam Quartin rapid-fires conviction-filled lyrics in a hefty New York accent over primal punk bass lines. I love the sound on their earlier records, which feel like a riot tearing down a speakeasy. However, this album leans more toward early 90's punk mixed with nu-metal. Providing a tang of nostalgia to soothe being whacked in the face with swagger.

WØMAN - Dogcunt (Official Site)

In honour of a song that will never get mainstream radio play, 'Dogcunt' is awarded this week's spot on the filth list. It's 2026, the fact that this song still hits on so many levels, is wild. Hats off to WØMAN for their ballsy, tongue-in-cheek take on misogyny. Based in Tāmaki Makaurau, I'm keeping my eyes peeled for when they finally tour the motu.

Thank you again this week to all my readers. Remember that listening to new music is good for the brain and soul. If you have a fresh tune you wish to share, please email me: waxonandonandon@gmail.com.
